I have great memories of the Azores. I spent 19 months there (Lajes Field, Terciera) in 1953-1955 (long time ago I know!). It was not as "flash" then as it seems now. I was a 19/20 year old airman and it was my first time out of the US. There were not any fancy restaurants, bars, etc in Praia and very few in Angra, but the vino was great and very cheap. Most casa vinos in Lajes were very basic (earthen floors and wine served by the pitcher or bottle from a large cask) but the people were so friendly and eager to try to speak English. I retired from the USAF in 1977 and now live in England. My wife and I hope to visit my old haunts in the Azores, perhaps next year. Visit there - I think you will love it!

Yep, the volcanoes are active. According to Wikipedia, there have been 28 registered volcanic eruptions (15 terrestrial and 13 submarine) since the islands were settled in the 15th century. The last significant volcanic eruption, the Capelinhos volcano (Vulcão dos Capelinhos), occurred off the coast of the island of Faial (in 1957); the most recent volcanic activity occurred in the seamounts and submarine volcanoes off the coast of Serreta and in the Pico-Jão Jorge Channel (from 1963 to 64).

And yes, they can speak functional english and do have awesome cuisine! As for the gin, I dunno, do tell us if you find out :)

I forgot to ask: Are the volcano's still active in the Azores? Are they on the Euro system? I hear the best "gin and tonics" are served in the Azores....do they make their own gin? Are they bilingual (Portuguese/English)? They seem to have great cuisine!!!

I'm presently watching a TV show on the "Travel Channel" with Anthony Bourdain as host. He visits three of the Portugal Azores Islands and learns about the local fare (food) and customs. The Azores seem like a very unique place to visit and even live. I might have to visit sometime in the near future!!

Universal Studios is still one of the best film studios and you can also visit their offices .

If you move there and are willing to adapt and live like the locals, 750.00 Euros per month means the barest of basics and not much else. My wife and I lived there for two years and we lived on about 1300.00 - 1400.00 Euros per month. We were not tourists so we did not visit a myriad of restaurants or tourist spots that are available. We grew two gardens per year and stayed away from the American chain stores and establishments. Learning the language is a requirement if you want to live there. The city centres and such in Ponta Dalgada and Vila Franco are relatively bilingual; however, leave the city centre areas and it’s all Portuguese Spanish and very much Catholic. The Catholics are very protective of their power base on most of the Islands. Sao Miguel is a beautiful island to wander around.
